SCHUH, Cliairman, J. E. Bacr, Secretsrv. Dated, Ann Arbor, June 29, 1888. While the common counoil ib favoring mprovomonts, it would be a good idea for the board to order laid the wretchod sidewalks to be found on many streets, and some of them on the principal thoroughfares of the town. Nothing gives the etranger a worse opinión of a city than to ■tumble over disjointed, broken and rotten walks; and nothing makes a better impreasion on one than neatly laid, substantial walks. It is the first thiufc that strikes the stranger's eye. What but a poor opinión can oue have of a town that puts a premium on broken lega. The finish of ridicule was put to the farce of hypocrisy at the Chicago convention by Congressman Boutelle of Haine, when he offered tbat 'tomperance plank" addition to the already adopted platform. "The republican party cordially sympathizes with all wise and well-directed efforts for the promotion of temperance and morality." Does it indeed? But, perhaps the temperance people of Miohigan can be made to believe that. Some people, it is said, can be made to believe that the moon is composed of green cheese. The republicana had to have a barrel at one end or the otber. The Chicago convention knockcd out millionaire Aloeb tor president, only to put ap millionaire Morton for vice president. Compare Cleveland and Tiicrjían with IIabbison and Morton. The Detroit Evening Journal with its oharacteristio promptness and energy had an "extra" on the streets in 20 seconds after the nomination in Chicago Tuegday. It was the quickest work ever done in a newspaper office. Enthusiasm looks well in print Uut why do not our republican (rienda do Bomething to signify thelr delight over their nominees. Is it the weather which acts as a cold blanket, the rain, too much commencement or what? It ia very doubtful if even Aloeb could oarry Michigan. Ben. Habbison certainly cannot. The republicana are surely (iefeated, and Mr. Cleveland' election as oertain now as that he lives. JSo man can be electe.l president of this country on the reputation of his grandfather.
