A sraall country town in the southeastern part of this State, says the Boston Travtller, is at present enjoving as lively a ohurch quarrel as often falla to the lot of towns its size to have, and it all has arisen over a pair of ducks. It happened In this way: A clergyman from a large city in the State of New York went to this town to talca charge of oue of tlie local churchos, and, as later u venta proved, he was not well vursed in the ways of the country. After h luid been In his new location for about two months, one day he was walking along the street wheu he saw two ducks walking down the street He liked the looks of these birds very much indeed, and he thought that they would make at least ono good meal for him. No sooner had the thought struck him thau he acted upon it, and tnking a duck under eaéh arm ho startcd on his way home. Arriving there he chopped the birds' heads off and had them cooked for his dinner. He eat and was happy, but not many days later a negro neighbor put in an nppearance and said the ducks were hls and wauted to know by wbat right ho Imd taken possession of them. The clergymau only pleaded innoceuce and offered to py for the birds he had eaten. The colored owner said that thoy wero trained decov ducks, and thnt he would accept $10 for the birds but benioaned tiieir loss. The clergyman, however, would or could not appreciate the value of docoys, and declared he woiild on)y glve the negro $2.50, The negro tinally accepted this amount under protest The story, however, soon spread throughout the viJlage and caused no end oí talk. Somo of the mioister's parishoners talked Drettyloud, and one woman declared that it was a shanie that a clergyman should go througb the street and steal a poor negro's ducks, and declared that the minister was ao man if he did not pny the man $10. Those words came to the clergrman's ears, and great was his wrath thereat He dnclared that unless the womau took back her words and came and apologized to him he would expel her from the church. But her woman's temper was up and she roiterated her statements coucerning her spiritual adviser, and declared that be liad no right to e.xpel her from the church. Thus it went on until Easter Suttday he declared at the morning service that Mrs. was expelled from all further riglits and privileges in the churoh. Since this time sonie of the other clergymen. havo beconio interested in the trouble, and are now endeavorlng to heal the breach and quiet the disturbed waters. How their efforts wlll sucoeed remains to be seen. But it shows the tremendous powev of ducks at times.
