John H. Haruion, the veteran newspaper man and politician, whose name is known in evory cross-roads in Michigan, died at the Michigan Exchango in Detroit on the Cth inst. Ho was boni in Portage county, Ohio. When only 19 years oíd he carne to Detroit and reeeived a position as printer in the Free Press office. Subsequently he graduüted into the editorial departinent and later became a partner in the ownorship of the paper. Shortly after his arrival in Detroit his democracv led him to join in the "Patriot War" agaiust Canada. The expedition which he joined was not successful. ïhere were too many Hritish troops at Windsor. During his career asapublisher and journalist he ventured into politics. He was elected an alderman of Detroit in 1848 and ma.vor in 1852-3. In 1853 President Pierce appointcd him collector of the port oL Detroit. After his retiroinent froru that ofilco owing to his familiarity with public affairs, he found it to his interest to live in Washington and follow the profession oí a lobbyist, In this occupation he ws higbly sucfcessful.
