The butterfly collection belonging to Prof. Neumoogen, of Drooklyn, N. Y., is worth $60,000. The divisiĆ³n of time into months and weeks is so old that its origin cannot possibly be ascertained. The different countries of the world now use 13,400 different kinds of postage statnps. Ocean Bteamers of the first class each consume from 190 to 220 tnos of coal a day. The entomologists say that the gnat's probocis is a combination of seven needies and lances, besides a cupping appaj-atus. An authority on cats says that blueeyed cats are always deaf, and that pure white ones are afllicted in the same mannpr. Tobacco statistics prove that twothirds of the grown male population of the globe eithcr smoke or chew the "weed." The Bibliotheque National of Paris, the reputed largest library in the world, now has 1,400,000 bound books and 900,000 pamphlets. More than 185,000 persons committed suicide in the different countries of the world during the year ending September 30, 1895. This is an increase of nearly 20,000 over 1894. It has lately been ascertained that the humming noise made by telegraph wires is not due to wind, as it can be heard in time of dead calm. The most tenable explanation is that lt is caused by a tightening of the wires, owing to atmospheric changes.
