A new society to be known as " The Ladies' Art Club," has been formed in the city, and held its first meeting at the Ladies' library, Tuesday afternoon. The object of the club is to mak e an exhaustive study of painting, from eailiest times to the present. On Tues day, the subject was the painting of Babyion and ilineveh. Papers were read by Mrs. Lombard, Mrs. Efutchins, Mrs. Clarkson and Mrs. Vaughn. Engravings and pictures illust rating the subject at hand, arebrought for instruction, and after the reading of the papers, an hour is spent in general discussion. The club was organized fop the pur pose of assisting the management of the library to keep the rooms open every day. This is something they have always desire 1 to do but have never been able to afford it. The membership fee in the nevv club is $3, but as the membership is limited to members of the library, it makes the two cost 4 per year. The ladies are delighted with the membership already gained, about 35 having joined, and invite all ladies interested to join with them. Mrs. J. M. Wheeler is president, Mrs. Dr. Lombard conductress, and Miss Alice Douglass assistant conductress of the club. In this connectiou it may be well to cali the attention of the ladie-s of the city to the privilege of the library. For the small fee of SI per year amone may have the privilege of drawing books ander the rules of the library The room is now open every day, and the books may be changed as of ten as desired. A splendid selectiou of books is on the shelves, and the list is continually growing. It is the most convenient place in the city to get the newest books, and the only wonder is that more people do not avail themselves of its privileges.
