Houghton, Mich., Nov. 23.- The steamer B. W. Arnold, on lire and abandoned by her crew. went ashore near the Salmón Trout river in Lake Superior yesterday morning. The Arnold had 800,000 feet of lumber, bound for Chicago, having in tow the schooner Mowatt, also lumber-laden. When oft Ontonagan Saturday about noon Ure was discovered in the deck load of the steamer. The crew fought the flre bravely, and every possible effort was made to save the vessel. After flve hours battling with the flames they were compelled to retreat because of the heat. The crew then boarded the schooner, cut the tow line and allowed the burning steamer to drift away. The Portage lake shipcanal life-saving crew under Captain Smith went out to the Arnold, and after rowing fifteen miles reached her at 5:30 in the afternoon. They found they could do nothing to save the doomed steamer. She burned to the water edge : after going ashore.
