The Roman empire had a system of paveel roadsradiating from Rome in every direotion to tbe utmost limits of Roman territory. One great road led across the Alps into Gaul, to a poiut near Calais, and beginning again in Britain it ran directly north to the wal] of Severns; another down the valley of the Dannbe, and from Coustantinople east, thronghSyria and Palestine, to the Euphrates. Still another ran west.along the seacoast, into Spain, while África had its own system.
