Miss Addams and Mrs. Kelley first attended a Deaooness home, where they studied city missions, and became convinced that. in order to do anythinsr for ilie people,they must have soinethingbright and atiractive in a bo ial line bel'ore they attempted much in a relisious way. Forthis purpose II uil House wasstarted in li-87, and is now a v-ry impoitant feature of missionary vvork. 1 he rent of il uil Houe is given to the managers, and 25 h uses are built around Huil House, to ie ienied to the members. The rent of these houses also is given the association until 1920. hirtyeluba have been formed at LIull House, and ari average uf 2.500 people go there evey year, exclusive of those who go! there for relief. Many take advantage j of ihe erïucational classes, which are taught by competent teachers. Latin French, ánd Germán are uccessfully tanght, and the e is also a tlo'irishing Shakespearean club. A gymnasium also is connected with Huil House. Ente tainments of different kinds are f i equently given and are well attended, as there is no charge for admission The Sunday af teinoon concerts are alway sai tended by at least 400 persons There is also a coffee house, whici was establishi-d for the purpoe of mducing the working people to change tlieir food. hifferent articles of food are cooked here in such a way that they can easily be warmed up This feature of the work is rapidly com ng in' o f;ivor. billiard club for doys has been eriticized by some, but the m magers found it a wise thing to have, sinre the bnys would play billiards somewhere and "it is much bêtter for them to play at Huil House than at the a'oons, whose bu--i ness is materially damaged by the innovation.
