Aniong the earliest of the associations tobe formed for the benefit of the young people of the University, was the Tappan Presbyterian Association of the University of Michigan, named after Dr. Tappan. once pi esident of the University, and designed t? look after the spiritual life of Presbyterian students, and those attending the Presbyterian church of this city. It isdesigned to also estalilish and maintain series of lectures on church historyand christian topics, and several cuurses of such lectures have been given. Eventually it is also hoped to establish some permanent cbairs of instrucción, which shall be such as to aid students to do wli i Ie here, some work which shall shorten their course in the seininaiy, and enable tliem to get into the work of the ministry more quickly. Through the liberality of the late Mrsi H. Louise Doe Sackett, the association becnme owner of the property on the corner of Huron and State streets, and the building there standing is now known as Sackett Hall, in memory of Mrs. Saekett's only sou. Senator James McMillan erected on the adjoining lot a fine building now known as McMillan Hall. These two buildings adjoining and communicating give the association a fine equipment for its work They contain a number of living rooms, a line library, study rooms, an auditorium seating about 400, and in the basement a gymnasium and bath rooms. The library has receieved a number of vahiable donations, and is especially rich in reference books, and books relating to church history As is the case with the other denominations, the local congregation is not able to bear the expense of maintaining and operating aplantequal to the demand, and this year the buildings are not used by the association for lack of funds. However, it is earnestly hoped that this may be overeóme by another year. For the present school year Sackett Hall is being used by the University Y. M. C. A., so that part at least of these advantages are open to those who care to make use of them under its auspices.
