Mrs. Mary C. C. Bradf ord of Colorado said at the recent National Suffrage Convention in Des Moines: The tone of poljtical conventions has improved since suöïage was granted to woinen. feo has tl:e character of the candidatos. Men say to the nominating cominittee.5, "l.)on't put that man , the women will scrateh him;" anc we do, and the scrateh of the enfranchised woman is fatal. When a good wornan says to a bad man, '-Don't you daré!" provided she has the ballot in her hand, he doesn't dare. Women, whatever good things you want, the shortest way to them ís through the ballot. One of our politicians was going to do something dishonorable to secure party success. A woman of his own party said to him: "That would be dishonest. You shall not do it. I won't let you." He asked, "How will you prevent it?" She answered, "I'll teil" (a woman's way). He said, "You daren't teil; if you do, the party will be defeated, and I'll see that your hnsband is not re-eiecteü city treasurer. Jsut she told. The party managers offered to forgive her husband if he would promise that she shouid never do such a thing again. He at. wered, "üent Jemen, my wife is an independent citizen and an honorable woman, and I cannot promise;" and he lost his position as city treasurer. Some of us thought it was i pity, and we asked her if her husband would not like to be county treasurer. That office carnes with it a little more honor and 8500 a 'year more salary. She saicl she thought he would; and he is county treasurer today. There is na character-builder like responsibility. Every woman's club in the ttate has been tarned into a study club, and the women are studying public qnestions for themselves! This is oneof the best resultsof equal suffraee. - The Woman's Column.
