Albany, N. Y., March 10.- The resolution of the joint committee on trusts, which held sessions in New York city last month, as submitted to the legislature Tuesday, notes the fact that a decisión of Judge Swayne on the federal constitution forbids action on the part of an individual state to absolutely repress trusts, but the committee express the belief that the attorney general can, by bringing aetion before a supreme court judge, in some respeets remedy existing evils. A bilí which accompanies the report grants immunity for witnesses who incrimina te themselves and gives the supreme court subpoena power. A bilí may be introduced to stop the factor system as used by the sugar trust. State Senator McCarren flled a minority report, exonerating the sugar trust and saying that the trust has made possible lower prices for the commodity. Embezzler Sentenced Boston, March 10. - Allison C. Mason, convicted of embezzling the funds of the Globe Investment company, of which company he was president, was sentenced to state's prison Monday in the superior court for a period of not less than five or more than eight years. It was proven that during the time that Mason was president and Morse, who is now serving a sentence, was treasurer, nearly $600,000 of the funds of the company disappeared. Mason was arrested Nov. 9, 1896, and after being indicted, pleaded guilty on two counts of the indictment. Minister Klopes witb a Woinan. New York, March 10.- Rev. E. J. Oldknow Millington, pastor of Fairmount Baptist church, Newark, N. J., disappearod a week ago and nis friends have boen greatly distressed lest he had met with f.iul play. The treasurer of his church, J. H. Bachellor, gave out a statement, which said that Mr. Millington had gone away with Mrsv Dickerson, a member of his church, who is also missing. St. Louis, March 10. - Word has been received that öovernor Stephen has commuted the sentence of JohnSchmidt, yenteneed to hang at Clayton, for the murder' of Bertram Atwater, Chicago artist. to twenty-flve years' imprisonment in the penitentiary. John's cousin, "Cotton" Schmidt. a mere lad and a negro, were hanged last month for complicity in the murder.
