Miss Ellen Hinsdale, daughter of Prof. Ilinsdale, of Atii Arbor, received lier Ph. D. from the University ef Göttingen last week. This is the first time that the authorities at the Göttingen University have allowed a woman to try for the degree in Philology, a department whieh, in Göttingen. requires an unusually thorough and laborious preparation. ïhe case was, moreover, complicated by the violent resistance offered by one of the professors of Philology to letting a woman take the Ph. D. in his sacred department. He tried everythingin his power to prevent the catastrophe, but. fortunately, failei). Miss Ilinsdale wrote her thesis under the direction of Prof. M. Ileyne. who expresses the highest opinión of her work in his department. Since Miss Ilinsdale holds one of the inter-collegiate fellowships this year, her marked success will be especially gratifying to American wonien.- The Woman's Journal, Maren 6.
