The Republican House has re elected Speaker Thos. I!. Reed, thus giving hini his third term in that responsible position. üther men hankered af'ter the position, but it went to Mr. Reed without mueh struggle. lie has won his honors fairly. Probably none of the long line of distinguiatted men who have presided over that body, have done so with more signal ability than he. During his first term he found it necessary to adopt some drastic measures to compel action on the part of the body over which he presided, but be was equal to the occasion. 11e counted the members present when he saw them before him, in spite of a precedent that aJlowed them to sit silent and by refraining f rom voting defeat all efforts to forward public business. Probably no iiercer storm ever waged in that chamber than was aroused by this action. Epitheta that none would have dared tó apply to him on the street, were flercely hurled at him trom the Üoor of the house. ]5nt he was master of the situation, and the members were compelled to act. lic has been called a despot and a "czar," but he cin alTord to assiime the title while the people so thoroughly believe in him. Thai he will to the best of his ability expedite the public business is thorough understood by all. We are glad to again salute "Speaker Reed."
