The Michigan Branch of the American Association for the Advancement of Physical Kducition, held its first meeting at the Normal last Saturday. In the morning a most excellent program was given by the Normal students, undtr the direction of Prof. W. P. Uowen and Mrs. Fannie CheeverHurton, in the gymnasium. Every available corner in the gallery was fllled with visitors, anl many were unable io get in at all. First was given a Swedish lesson, consisting of various exercises and moyements, which were executed by the gi ris in a manner that called out enthusiastic applause. Next carne a series of exercises with the swmging rings, in which the bovs rereived their share of the applause which was well merited. A lesson with dumb I ells was most interesting and was beautifully executed by the girls who gave evidence of an ilmost military training in their close attention to orders and their precisión in execution. The most exciting event of the morning was the game of basket ball between the Normal team and the one froni the Pope & Outcbeon School of Detroit, which resulted in a score of 12 to 0 in favor of the .Normal team. A vocal selection by the Conservatory quartet and a game of basket buil by the boys, completed the morning program. The aflernoon session was held in líO'im ol in the Normal building, where ano' her interesting program was rendered. A paper on " The Hibliography of Physical Edueation." was given by Miss Carrie B. Phelps of Adrián. Among the many desirnble books on this subject, Miss Plielps spoke of the books of Dr. Mary Wood-Allen of Ann Arbor, as being most helpful and uplifting. The discussion of this subject was led by Mrs. F. O. Hurton. The next paper on "Presciibed Exercises for Students.'was a most able one by Prof. Bowen, and was supplemented by an interesting and instructive add ess by the president of the association, Dr. El iza M. Mosher of Ann Arbor. An interesting paper on " Practical Work" was given by Miss Alice Gr. Snyder of Ann Arbor, aml was ably discussed by Miss Evelyn MacDougal of Detroit, and Miss Weed of Grand Rapids. Kemarks ver' made by different members of the association, and a fraternal feeling wa-s manifested throughout the entire meeting. I he work i f the No mal gymnasium was most highly complimenied. a bout 100 guests were present, of whom 50 came trom Detroit and 30 from Ann Arbor.
