Battle In Macedonia
Constantinople, March 31. - Tf the reports just reeeived here from Lhe Tuvkish headquarters at Elassona are correct, fighting has already occurred on the Tui-kish side of the frontier of Macedonia. It is said that the Greek leader, Alexis Taki, a brother of the famous chieftain of that name, crossed the frontier into Macedonia on Sunday last accompanied by about twenty-flve of his followers. Near Grevena the Greeks met and engaged an advance post of Turkish troops, commanded by a Germán oflïcer. In the fighting which followed the Turks lost twelve killed and had twenty men wounded, including the Germán officer. The loss of the insurgents is not known. The latter subsequentJy returned across the border into Greek territory. Vast Possibil ities of Trade. Washington, March 31. - United States Minister Denby at Pekin lias notified the department of state that as a result of the efforts of the British government China has consented to open to commerce the West river on whieh is situated Cantón and at the mouth of which lies Hong Kong. Mr. Denby has much to say on the importance of this event and the vast possibilities of trade along this great waterway, and mentions the fact that the removal or modiflcation oL the onerous international transit taxes vvill follow the opening of the river. Illinois Legislatura-, Springfleld, Hls., March 31.- The senate bill authorizing the borrowing of $250.000 by the governor, auditor and treasurer was taken up by the house on third reading and debated at length. The emergency clause was then stricken out and the bill passed; yeas 81, nays 47. lt will thus be inoperative until July 1. The senate passed the house bill appropriating $20,000 for an Illinois exhibit at th.e Tennessee centennial and international exposition and providing for the appointment of forty commissioners to represent Illinois. Wants To Be Minister to Brazil. Washington, March 31. - Senator Pritchard was at the White House Tuesday in company with H. A. Gudger of North Carolina, who wants to be minister to Brazil. Senator Poraker introduced to the president W. A. Pledger. a colored Republican leader of Georgia, who asked for the consul generalship to Kingston, Jamaica. T. M. Dent, another Georgia colored man, has applied Lor appointment as minister to Hayti. Boiler Explosión the Death of Five. Augusta, Ky., March 31.- The boiler of a portable sawmill exploded, instantly killing two men and fatally injuring three others. The killed are: Calvert Boone and J. R. Tucker. The dead aifd injured men were employés who were at work around the mili at the time the explosión occurred. None of them will recover.
