Put-in-Bay, O., July 7.- The second day's session of the American whist congress opened Tuesday morning with a business meeting of the delegates, at whlch President Barney of Providenee, R. I., presidid and Clarence A. Henriques as secretary pro tem. A speech of welcome was made by Clarence Brown of Toledo. Reports of officers were read showing the .league to be in healthy financial condition, and an increase of twenty clubs in membership during the past yeai. Monday night the flrst championship contest of the' present congress took place, Sixty players divided among three auxiliarles battled for the Brooklyn trophy. Those entered were the New York State a?sociation, New England Whist league, and the Atlantic league. New York won the trophy by winning both matches against their rivals. Atlantic won one match from New England and lest cne.to New York. New England lost both matches. In tricks gained New York beat New England nine aid Atlantic one. Atlantic beat New England thirteen tricks. but lost the trophy by lcsirg their match against New York. The Tormey system of scoring was used and proved a brilli&nt success. Tuesday afternoon the contest for the Hamilton trophy began with fifteen entries. The contest wil) last all week. Tuesday night the battle for the A. W. L. trophy commeneed with .flfteen entries. Hotel Victory is crowded with visitors and yachtmen and is very lively, the weather being cold and delightful.
