London, Juiy 12.- Au Important conference v;is heM at the foreign office taday botween Senator Walcott, fonner Vice-President Stevenson and Gen E'aine, the members of the United States bimtetallic commission, and Ambassador Hay and Lord Salisbury. Si] Mlehael Hicks-Beaca, chancellor of the exchequer, llr. Arthur Balfour. first lord of the treasury, and Lord George Hamilton, secretary of state for India. The conference, which lasted au hour, was preliminary to the carrying on of further negotiations on rlie subject of international bijnetal'sra. The Amerieans did most of the talking. Lord Salisbury inquired wh.u were tiie powers oif the 'American commissioners and was infonned that they stand authorized to make arrangements for the holding of an nteraational conference or to negotiate a treaty of international bimetallism. whieh they might sabmit to thelr gov'i-ument for ratilication. Ir was stated also that France was the DnJted States, 'Great Britain and ifni'.auy in reaching an agreement for international bimetallism. The British represen tatives present rade no statement indicatiug their intentions in the matter. ('onsultations of high British officials will be held before another meetng with the American commissioners and in 'the meantime the latter will jrivately discuss the question wlth Baron De Rothchild and other financiers, and endeavor to secure their suport. Loi-d Salisbury aceompanied Messrs. Wolcott, Stevenson and Paine to urcheon at Windsor on Saturday. vhen they were received by the queen and presented to her majesty their commissions as special envoys. The eception was entirely formal.
