George Beckwith, of Ohelsea, was diowiu'd in the Hui'iHi rivi'i', a mile aboye Fosters, at about 1 o'cloiS ednesö&y niorning. Walter Warren, of Fasters, tells the follawing story of the drowning: "WIth Mouroe Kendell, of Fosters, I was returning from the circus at Aun Arbor. Wheu a.bont a mile albove Posters in front of the old NefiE place, we heard cries for help coming fn u the tlirection oí the river. The cries ( ntinued aud i man kept calling out 'Help! I am dröwning.' We hurried to the river's bank "but found that he was in on the other side towards the railroad. The river is atoout 150 feit 8'Cross there and before my companion, who started to swim for liini, eould get to hhn. he went down. AVe talked to him but did not see him before he s:mk. He said that he was standing on a stoüe but could not swim. We toid him we were coming 'but he must hare slipped off the stone." Sheriff Judson and Coroner Ball went to the seene of the drowaing Wcdnesday. Aiter dragglng the bottoin of the river for Bome time the body was found. Sheriff Judson identifled it as that of George Beckwith, of Chelsea. A valuable gold witch was found on the person of the drowned man. It is not known how Beckwith ea-mè to go near the rlver. The place where the body was found is quite a distante from boith raad and railway. The path the man took throngh the rv.shea was plainly marked 'by trampled grass and weeds. There are several inarks on the face of the dead man lmt how they carne there is not known. The iacts,in the case will probably be disclosed at the inquest. Since the raid on tramps at Camp Pingree, the hobos throughi the surrounding country have been getting more and more numerous. People should rememibei' the Antl-Tramp society and not give tramps food. They can get work and food by applying I to the Anti-Tramp society.
