When the prop.rietor of the A mi Ai'bor Democrat concluded to prizes to the school ehildren oí this ooitQty, un4er the auspices of tiie Waahtenaw County Fair, he decid'] tha't those prizes sbxrald not be goo.'ls of questionable valué ata faney prico, but the good. hard, gold standard cash on which there can be uo discount, and tha-t these prizes should be offere-1 for some production which will be of future value to the schools and the school children. The first eonsi tion is met by the cash prizes. The second was not 80 easy, but the decisión to offer the prizes for" excellence in the use of the English lauguage will meet with the approval of those interested. The correct use of the English language is an essential part of a göod education. Too mueh attention eannot be paid to it in our primary schools. Then, ágain, the ivijuirement that the subjects of the essays pertain to some matter oí loc.U hJstory will locallze the efforts, an-1 doubtless liring out mauy ïnteresting reminiseenees of the settlement of Washtena-w county. Every school m the county should be reyresented by ono or more contestans. It will do the school good and serve to Stimulate an -interest in a useíul educational work. All it casts is the effort of preparing the essays. CONDITIOXü. The conditions of this oontest are as folio ws: The eoutestant must be a pupils below the ninth grade in one of the schools of Washtenaw eounty outside of the cities of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. The essay must eontain aot less than 250 nor more Ihan 300 words. It must be on some subject pertaining to local liistory. It must be certiffed to by tlio teacher oi' ia school in which the contestant is a pupil. The First Prize will be $5.00 cash; the Second, $3.00; the ï"hirï, $2.00. .s.il who take part in the content will receive a year's sutracription to Plie Demoerat. Ail oï the essays of suffleient merit will bc pubíished in The Democrat in tiie order of their r.erit.
