The Detroit, Ypsilanti and Aun Arbor Kailway company, sueses-sors to the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Street Railway company, working under their ordinance would, if tliey were disposed to press their privileges, have a "cinch" on any street in the city, the only conditions being that the kind of rail used and the method of putting it in being subject to the approval oí the council. However, the railway company do not wish to antagonize the people of this city and do not wish to put down in a hurried n.anner a railway that is going to come anyway. It will be noticed telow that by the conditions of their franchise the extensión of the road ín this city is to be in operation within eighteen montas of the passage of the ordinance, whioh would make the privileges expire on February 17. It U probable that the company will ask the council for an extensión of time ou the ordinance. This should be granted iu order that the railway compary and the city eau work in harmony for the consummatioh of an "inevitable." The following are the lirst two seetions of the street railway ordicance: "That permission and authority be and the same is bereby granted and vested in tüe Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Street Eailway cornpany, thetr succesiora and assigns, and any company Corporation su ceeding to tiieir pioperty rights, to lócate, estaiblish, construct and maintain strest rnilwiys upon any of the streets within the city of Ypsilanti, with necessary and convenient tracks for turn outs, side tracks, switches, and to run and mairtüiin thereon railway cars for the carriage of passengere, baggage, express and mail for thirty years from the date thereof, subject to tho following eonditions: "The said grantees, their successors or assigns and any corporation succeeding to their property rights, sliall have the right for a period of thirty years to maintain and opérate street raihvays on all Ihe streets on which they shall canstruct or put in operation strèet rallways within eighteen ruonths from the date of this orditiance. Provided, nothing in thib ordinance shall 'be so construid as to prevent tJie Aun Arbor and ïpsil:i;iti Street Railway company from continuing the use of the present tracks as now laid, proviiling that the present rail now in use shall be replaeel with a girder rail or one equally as goot1 within six years f rom the date of the passage of this ordinance." Then íollows eighteen moro sections which do not bear upon the present qr.estion. The date of the passage of the ordinance is August 17, 1S06.
