The ti guiar meeting of the conmioxi conneil Moaday was a lively one and the chances are that some of the aetion taken, will cause more or 1 ■ heated discussion aniong our citizens. Aid. Spathelf and Danforth alone were absent. The business attended to is briefly r.s follows: The petition of Sarah E. Sheehan asklng for a rebate of taxes was reiVnvd to the finance committee. A petition from Mrs. P. I Bodmer, askiiiK for a correetion of the description of a d&ed was rèferred to the city attorney. The subject of the League of A'inerican Municipalities was laid 011 the table until next session. Then followed the report of the flnance committee whieh was concurred in without división. The summary of bilis pald is aa follows: Contingent i'mul, $1,386.02; sewer fund, general, $123.80; street fund, $379.51; pólice 1'nud, $284.75; fire department fund, $500.93; poor fund, $230.06; cemetery l'und, 75 cents. Total, $2,007.02. The committee on finance, to whom had just been rèferred the petition of ■Sarah E. Sheehan, now reported in favor of returning her taxes to the amount of $79.41 and it was so ordered. The same committee recomraended that the petition of JSmnra H. and John S. Orr asking return of taxes be denied and the council agreed. An ordinance repealing the one governlag and controlling the Fifth ward cemtery was presented and passed to its second reading. The sewer committee reported that in its opinión the .nsrineering force of the city is eosting the city too mueh money and reeommended that the B. P. W. be asked to report to the council at its next meeting of the nunVber of employés ueeessary in that department. Adopted. The strest committee reported agaiust the clianging of Oxford street to Oxford road. The report was tabled until next session. The city treasurer presemted hls report as did the city snperitendent of poor. Aid. Brown then sprung the questlon of publishing in the official papers the names of all persons receivhig help from the city. The diseusslon was somewhat heated but It was flnally voted to print the Mines. The council voted also to print the city physieian's Teport. The attention of the board of hcalth was ealk-d to the several cases of diphtheria reported from the Fourth ward. The board was directed to investigate the cause of these cases and see if th-?y did not come fropi the several old vaults in the vicinity. During the discussion of this matter several uncomplimentary things were said about the health offlcer, Aid. BroTvn being partleularly cauatic. The council then adjourned.
