The ftrst native woman in China to hang out her shingle with an M. D. upiin iL i.s Miss Ida Kohn, who graduated trom the medical departement last year. She came to this country about .six car.s ago to study medicine, and now she has returned to her native town, Kin Kiang, on the Yangste River. Her counlrynien doubtless consider a new woman of the most advnnced type, and at first she will prob.ibly have more time on her hands tlian patients on lier list. Whlle in this country she wore the oriental garb only on holldays, and Hked the American .-'tyle so well that she intends to introsorne reform In dress among her iiuinti ywomen. Rumor has it that something entirely new in the social line is to take place in the near future. The University Glee, Banjo and Mandolín club,-; are going to give a combined concert and dance. Por Uie past two years the musical clubs have been prohibited by the faculty trom taking their annual piing' trip. The reason for this is that the clubs had too gay a time on tl:e long western trip which they took íhe year before last. On that trip they atarted out to have a high oíd time, and they had it. The faculty thought they had too much of a high oíd time. It was reported that when the club.-; gave their concert in Denver the members were entertained by the Denver club during the afternoon and evening before the concert, and, sad to relate, many of them imbibed too frequently from the flowing bowl. As a result, when the Glee club came forward on the stage in the evening to sing the ■ld "Yellow and Blue," the club was teeling so jovial that they deeided to alter the program somewhat and sing all the popular airs of the day instead of the program announced. This they proceeded to do, much to the. consternation of the audience. To punish the clubs for this conduct the faculty would not allow the '97 clubs to leave town and again this year took the same actton with reference to the '9S clubs, although many members of the faeulty object ed ta such stringent measures. because of the fact that all the members of this year'a clubs are models of good moral conduct and propriety. As a reault tinclubs will not take any trip this spring, nor will they give a concert In CJniverslty hall as they did last year, but, il thé report which is abroad is, true, will give the afore-mentioned dance and concert instead. This function will be given in Frleze .Memorial hall sometijne next month. and ouly friends of the members of the clubs will receive invitations t be present. Th? ürst part "f the evening will be spent in listening to a concert rendered by the clubs, after which dancing will be ín order. All faculty Bociety ladies will be asked to act as patroneases, except the wives of tbose members of the faculty who were most instrumental in passing Uie prrhibiting out-of-town trips. Tbc event will be awaited with great interest. Even rurnors of war have a patl side.
