The Demoerat will give the fóllowing cash prizes to the school children of Washtenaw county for historical essays, to be exhibited school day at the Washtenaw county fair of 1898. All essays must be upon some topic relating to the early history of the school district of which the competitor is a resident. It is the design of these prizes to bring out hicherto unpublished reminiscences of early life in Washtenaw county and the originality of the narrative, as well as the merits of the English composition, will be considered by the committee in making the awards. All entrys must be made in the regular way with the fair authorities. To children of the graded schools of the cities and villages of Washtenaw county, below the ninth grade, for best eonforming to the above conditions, $3; for second best, $2. For children of country schools of Washtenaw county for best essay conformïng to' above conditlons, $3; for second best, J2. These special school prizes are ofthus early that teachers and scholars may avail themselves of the opportunity to compete for them and perfect their work before the the curren i thcre is not siifticient time between the opening of the schools in the fall and the date of the fair to insure good work and general competition.
