The. mor offered $50 to th ftrst student, $25 to tlif seeond and $10 tü thc third who would tell him what difference it would have made to him had he been paid in gold or the "best ranney," he having received a boumy of $50, pay of $13 per month and having bei ti in the army three years and fourteen days. The governor also w to learn what difference il made to th ■ Whole army and huw much it would take now to pay the difference with " per cent Interesl payable semi-annually and compounded. Gen. Irish reeét ■ ed ánswers from nine students, and says; ín consldering their respective correctness l have been greatly assisted by Capt. Cornellus Gardner, U. S. A., and 1 dísire at this time to acknowledge- hls carefui and painstaking efCprts in verifying the lengthy eomputations. 1 concur with him in the conclusión that the answer of M. J. Barry ÍS entitled to the first prize of $50; that of Romanzo Adams to the second of $25; and that of li. M. Watkins to the third of $10. The ánswers of Mr, M. .). Barry to the questlons are as tollo ws: Question 1- "What difference did it make to me (i. e., Gov. Plngree)?" Answer- $181.47. Question 2 - "What difference did it make to the whole Union Army?" Answrr- $566,224,855.51. Question 3 - "How much would !t take now to pay the difference with :'. per cent interest payable semi-annually and compounded?" Answer - To pay Gov. Pingree's differenee, $495.20. To pay the difference to the United States Army, $1,288,408,074.47. Mr. Barry is a member of the law i -Iü.np of '9S and resides Ín Cheyenne,
