The following extracta are ('rom a personal letter written by Roes Spnce, now studyíng music in Berlín: "Early in the week 1 went out to Charlottenburg, a suburb about tv. minutes by trolley, where s situated astle once the home of King Frederick William til. and Queen Louise, father and mother oL the old Em William. 1. the mausoleum built by the present Emperor William the r.imd of these three and the wtf u;e old emperor, Empress Augusta, and is a son of shrine. It is very plain on the outside but the interior is rii.-)], although simple. .s y ni i at the nead of a ilieht of steps i.-1 see.n an immense statue, nu angel "f eictory I believe, which is flooded with ;; pi light and whleh creates an awe-inspiring effect as you stand in the corridor. The four tombs are within one large room which is fini.shed entireiy ir. marble. The figure of Queen Loui.-o ap■il in me the most beautiful. You know shc was a famous heauty and her lóvellness of charácter endeared her to the Germán people so much that she is held nearly in the Hght of a sajiit. Eyery. year on her birthday her slatue in the Thiergarten is covered with llowers. I forgot to state that the oleum stands in the park conl with the Charlottenbuig eastle. Unfortunately J did not have time to throügh the schloss or see much of the grounds but I expect to make other pilgrimages out there as it must be ! most beautiful in suirmer. I saw a smáll portion of the National gallery. but happened to get intQ the part devoted to modern Gerirfan painters, which is not as interesting as other portions. # "Yesterday I went through the palace of ,i!(l Emperor William. It s situated on Unter-den-Linden and lik ■ the rest of the (.ierman castles which i have seen, is not a handsome bir.lding, The interior, however. is rich and elegant though simple. The rooms are íilled wltb gifts, órname. lts and pictures and the emperor's desk ís seen just as he left it. There is a wonderful echo in the ball-róom. The ceillng is a perfect dome with a smail cupöla the center and when the . guide clappéd her hands the sound was repeated a dozen or more times. I wish you could have heard Lillie Lehmann n the last Nickish concert. It's a great pleasure to hear somebody sfng when every note rings true and you are not made aware of any diliiculties, although jou know the music is full of them."
