The Hon. J. R. Burton, of Kansas, ís to deliver the closing leoture in the S. L. A. courst: at Univeraity Hall thla f-vening on " An Epoeh and lts l,isons." Whilo Mr. Burton has been in Kansas lie has moved rapidly to Ihe front, and now by eommon consent occupies the place which John .1. Jngalls so long held in Kansas politics. He was in the legislatura in S2. 'S4 and 'SS. He was the recognized leader of that body in the last two sessions of his service. Tn j '91 he hekl a series of joint debates with Senator Peffer which attracted considerable notice. In '92 he was nominated for Congress, and cut a majority of 9,000 against him down to 1,000, securing the election of his party's nominee two years after. He decüned a renomination in '94 and stood for the T'. S. senate. The race for the senatorship at iirst showed Mr. Burton clearly in the lead. His principal opponent was .J J. Ingalls. For several ballots Mr. Burton was within two votes oC election. At the last moment Lucien Baker, a dark horse, appeared and carried away tke prize. Last January Mr. Burton vas the republican caucus j "nee for U. S. senator, this time ing Ingalls three to one. But few men in the nation "ombine so happily the practical and poetic in speech as does Mr. Burton. He has a brilliant imagination but it only serves his greater reasoning powers. His delivery is at once forceful and eloquent In language he is fluent and correct, but his greatest merit Is his deep and intense earne-stness. He belltves evsry ■.'■ -ni he says and has great power of convincing others. He is a student of the past. a correct observer of the procent, and one who looke far into the future. It canr.ot be said that he has any particular style of elocution, but rather that he has every style. He is essentially hirr.self in delivery, and has learned the full meaning of Shakespeare's lesson, "Buit the actio:i to the word."
