Professor Carhart," of the Physics Department of the University of Michigan, has designed an elexrtric dynamo for alternating currents which is used in the physical luboratory for experimental and illustrative purposes lt was fuly described in the American Electrician for Xevember, under the title "A Universal Laboratory Alternator." The professor of physlca at "West Point saw this artiele and subsequently ordered f rom the University OÍ Michigan a duplícate machine for íjovernment use. As it was not practicable to mak,e the machine entirely in the University of Michigan, a complete set of casiing has been furnlshed West Pcrint Acadèmy, lnstéad. The maci.ine has been two years in maklng. Designed by Prof. Carhart the work has been carried out by two pairs of students working under hls direotioi;. The flrst year the studente were r. L. Wheeler, of Saindstone, and ;. K. McMullen, of Grand Rapids. The seuond year they were A. C. Tagge, and F. j;. Vicker, of Ishpeming. Diirlng the past year transformers have bsen added by K. W. Brown and F. F. Crampton, 30 that now the alternator perfectly iili. sil-ates what are technically (illed polyphase cúrrente, used in tncandescent lighting and power machines. In the physical laboratory at present this machine runs thirty incandí lights. Saturday moining's Detroit Tribune among its legislative notes says: "It is said of Rep. Sa.wyer that the ri he was so strongly opposed to the appointive feature of the Pingree b.ill was because he feared that Wm. Judson would be appointed a meraber of the board of assessors. Judson has been the politica! boss of Washtenaw county and Sawyer, it is said, would like to capture the county delegation to the second district eongressional convention."
