In critlcislng the Democratie newspapers which have so uniformly supported Gov. Pingree In his efforts to aecure a just apportionment of the buidens 'if taxation, the Lansing Journal is most ungeuerous. Alfhough eleeted upon a Republican ticket, hlzzexcell n y is a better exponent of all thai is covered by that broad term Democracy than some of his critica who sport the Democratie label. lt is the substance and not the name that we seek. All of the Pingree measures whieh have commanded the support and eommendation of Democrats have been essentially Democratie. They are refo'rms lor which true Democracy has always stood and the fact that they are vigorously pushed by Pingree and a few Republieans, who are in line with him, do not make them less Democratie or justify a íactltious opposition upon the part of the Democratie pres:-. Those who believe in that broad Demoeracy which is the conservator of the iiberties of the people, will welcome efforts which tend to fortify and strengthen those liberties, without questioning the souree froni whence they come. We are always svorking for eonverts to uur way'of thinking. Shall we refuse to accept a new recruit because he brings with him a vigorous personality and a numerous following? Shall we reject the good offices of one who from a consplcuous position wlthln the enemy's Unes, proclaims to the wórld that: "Today all of the trusts ,iml monopolies, every agency whieh is bleeding the country, has taken refuge. un](■]■ the wlngs of the Republican party, because they fear the Democratie party Which has kïeked them out" and who; conforming his public action with his public ntterances, has not only waged a vigorous warfare upon the commpn enemy, but has also subtraeted from the Republican strength in this state a personal followmg, the losa of which is the most serioua blow that has bofallen that party in a quarter of a century? By all means let the good wor!; go on and let us glve a consistent and deseryed support to all efforts whlch are In line with Democratie reforms, and wh'ieh tend to the complete overtnrow of Republicanism and its perniciiHif! doctrines.
