The following appears in yesterday's issue of the "Neue Washtenaw Post:" The coming congressional convention in this, the second district, is awakening quite a little contention and promises to be quite interesting The present incumbent, Mr. Spa] ding of Monroe, who has airead; been honored by the party with tw terms of office, comes forward anc asks for a third term. Mr. Spaldin is a good fellow and a pretty smoot politician and he may succeed in downing all the other aspirants, ye if he fails he will not be a loser, a he has improved his opportunitie and made hay, so to speak, while th sun was shining. He has not only drawn a fine salary as congressman his son has received an enviable position in a Military Academy and his daughter, as his private secretary, is drawing a fine salary from the government, while his son-in-law is, I believe, harbor master at Monroe and in that capacity has had the handling of the government apropriations for said harbor. This is a pretty good showing for one family. It is more then most people get of politics and naturally there are others who think he has had enough and should get out of the way and give them an opportunity to assume the (!) arduous duties ? and draw the lucrative siilary and the "side advantages." Wayne Co. presents as its candidate Mr. Bishop, a large business man, a man of rare ability and untarnished character. Jackson Co. presents as its candidate that able lawyer and genial fellow, Chas. Townsend, while Lenawee Co. would also honor one of its ablest members of the bar, Mr. Henry Smith, with the nomination, and Washtenaw, our Washtenaw, presents as its candidate a young man whom every one loves and honors because of his known sterling worth and of his devotion tohisfriends and his duty, because of his kindly ture and noble heart, his beautiful character and ricbly endowed mind, and this man is the Hon. W. W. Wedemeyer. He is the ideal oi our young men and the admiration of the older men. Republicana and democrais alike love and honor him and will give him their united support. His name will add strength to the ticket and will materially aid the election of all the other candidatos. His nomioation would also remove a just cause for discontent, as it would be a fitting recognition of the aid rendered the republican party during the past two campaigns by Germatt-Americans. Cp to this time no German-American in Michigan has ever been honored by the republican party with a congressional nomination or any appointment of note. In the last campaign most of the republican gains were made in Germán centers, whilenative Amerïcans were largely captivated by the arguments of free silver and repudiaion, yet after the battle was won ;hey were totally ignored by the na;ive element. This course can have 3ut one effect, it must drive the German-Americans from the republican jarty and perhaps after the district ïas gone democratie a few times and s beyond redemption the natives nav be more willing to accord to German-Americans proper recogni;ion. Major Klrlt Comea Home. Major John P. Kirk will be home from Chickamauga tonight on leave of absence.
