Townsend men declare that the flght for the congressinal nomination has narrowed down to a c-ontest between Townsend and Spalding. It was claimed by the Townsend men that J. H. Bishop would throw nis votes from Wayne county to the Jackson county candidate before he would allow them to go to Spalding, because Spalding has fought Bishop so hard in nis own county. The Townsend men figured that with the Bishop crowd, if they could corral the Wedemeyer votes in "Washtenaw county, they could nomínate -their man. They therefore made strong efforts yeaterday to get the Pingree influence to induce Wedemeyer to withdraw in favor of Townsend, the latter would see to it that Wedemeyer should get the Jackson county votes for the state senatorship in the tenth district, at present represented by Senator Campbell, the district being composed of Jackson and Washtenaw . cornties. The Pingree man to whoin the proposition was made laugrhed at it, holding that the Townsend men wanted too much for what they offered.
