Chairman "VV. L. Watkins, of Manchester, called the Democratie convention for the second represen tative district of Washtenaw county together in the opera house at Saline Tuesday, and introduced M. T. Woodruff, editor oí the Ypsilanti Sentinel, as temporarj hairman. John Clark, of York, wal made temporary secretary. The following committees were ap pointed: Organization and order of business - E. Loomis, of Ypsilanti; Alf. Davenport, of York, and Peter "Weinett, of Saline. Resolutions - Jacob Birkle. of Lodi; W. A. Russell, of Augusta, and N. B. Karding, of Ypsilanti. Credentials- H. L. Renaud, of áharon; J. E. McGregor, 6f Ypsilanti, and E. R. Twist, of Superior. An adjournment was taken until 1:30 and the delegates filed into the eouncil ehambers, where the ladies 3f the presbyterian church had a bountiful dinner Upon reassembling, the temporary organization was made permanent, and Chairman Woodruff made a good speech, in which he dlscussed state issues and roasted the state administration and made a graphic compavison of the war expenses of several stat' Ex-Mayor Harding, of Ypsilantl, read the report of the eommittee on resolutions. which endorsed the Chicago platform, Justin R. Whltlng and pledged the nominee to a pelicy of retrenchment and economy at Lansing. Messrs. McGregor, Twist and Hagerman were appointed tellers. ■ W. L. Watkins, in a forceful speech, placed the name of Nathaniel Schmidt, of Manchester, before the convention. M. T. Woodruff performed the same service for Henry Stumpenheusen, of Ypsilanti town. The result oí the ballot was awaited with Interest, for a. spirited eontest had been made by the friends of both candidates. The ballot stood: Stumpenheusen BI, Schmidt 50. The nomination of Mr. Stumpenheusen was made nnammous. Both candidales were called before the convention and made ringing speeches. Chas. A. Ward, candidate for state senator, who was in the hall, was called for and addressed the convention upon the issues of the campaign, saying among other things that he beliaved railroad property should be taxad to the same extent that other property is taxed, and that if we can't get equal taxation any other way we can rpeal the charter of the Michigan Central, svhich some people think stands in the way of justice. The following district committee was appointed: W. L. Watkins, of Manchester; James Louden, Ypsilanti, and Dr. Pyle, of York.
