-The completion of the great cameurai alCologne, whieh is announced to take place in 1880, will mark ;tn era in the history of architecture throughout the world. The flrst stone of the great building was laid on the 14th of August, 1248, by Archbishop Conrad. The Pope granted indulgences for a year and forty days, and a host of penitents went prayerfully to work laying the foundation of the mighty structure. The choir of the church was consecrated in 1332 with great pomp, and services were held there soon af ter. The Kings of England and France made generous donations to aid in the work but through the indifEerence of those who should have been interested it was allowed to drag. In 1437, about two hundred yearsafter the foundations were laid, the south tower was completed. Duiing the Reformation the work was suspended, and in 1794, when the French soldiers occupied Cologne, they camped in the nathedral and desecrated it in every way. About the year 1610, Sulpice Boisseroe, an ai tist of Cologne, was fortĂșnate enough to discover the original design of the architect on parchment, and directcd the attention of Europe to the unflnished thought through by pictures of tlie building. In 1824 tĂie Prussian Government began to make repairs, and since that time the work of completing the edifice according to the design of the ancient architect has steadily progressed. Andnow, af ter a period of 36 yenis, the work is nearly completed. The cathedral is built in theform of a cross;; is 511 feet long, 231 feet wide, and the roof is supported on 100 columns, the centre onesbeing30 feet in circumference. The choir is 161 feet high and the tower about 640 feet high. Why is the couiling chain of a locomotive like loveV- Bteause lts a tender attaclimtnt.
