-Miss Maggie Smith of Binningham is visiting Miss Kishlar. - Albert Cranehasthe small pox, it being the second case in the city. - A large number of nerw students have entered tlie Normal recently. -Prof. Etabrook has been inattendance at the state institule this week. - Mitchel'B Pleasure Party in " üur Gqblins " hold forth at the opera house April 8d. -The Baptist cburch was found on fire one nitfht which was extingnislied and slight damage done. -The conference that was to be held at the Presbyterian cliurch this week has been indelinitely postponed. - Two new coaches run on the D. II. & S. AV. R. R., still au observer can see but little difference in the number of passenge i's. -Mr. Jake Forrester has left the employ of A. A. Bedell in his boot and slioe store and poes to Detroit as bookkeeper i'or a brewery. -Mr. D. C. Goodspeed, of the firm of Goodspeed & Conklin. is out of the city, and on liis return congratulations to him and him and his bride will be in order. - TwelvecarloadsofenuRrantspasscil through Wednesday, on their way to Manitoba. "Whitman. - A leap year party at Light Guard hall, vinder the auspices üi' the Lighi Guarda, engaged the attention oí the young people Tuesday night. One of the novelties of the occasion was the lady (loor managers, &c. - C. IÍ. II. Wheeler who has been so long connected with the D. II. & H. W. lï. 11. office is there no more. "We understand he will give his time to the oil business entirely. he having long been a member of the firra of C. & C. II. II. Wheeler in that business. - A serious fire occurred at the corner of Washington and Congress streets last week. burning three stores. Some of the contenta of the stores were saved and the remainder insured, some insurance on buildings also. If it results in the building of some brick stores in their places it will at least add to the appearanca of the street. -Local politics are attracting some attention at present. At the republican caucuses Tuesday night the following aldermen were nominated: First waid. S. Robbins; 2d ward. Wm. Clark; Sdward, John S. Jenness. In the 4th and öth wards they held no cauenses we are informed; we think they showed good judgment. for a democratie nomination is equivalent toaneleetion there. -Detroit detectives seem to be feeling bad liecause oilicer Shemeld refused to give np a prisonerand$1200heibund on her person, who he had arrested on a dispatch sent for that purpose. After learnmg the facts we think Mr. Shemeld. ijistiflable in the the cqurse he pursued, and Mv. Ewers' coming here the matter was settled to hls satisfaction. The real trouble is the Detroit parties thoughtthey had Btruck a mine and they were obligcil to lose it.
