. I subniH the foIlowinT points or Bpeciflcationg by which the valuo of a cow can be ascertaiuud lor productlon of buttcr. The word "bost," as it is generally tued in premium lists, has so maiiy meaniiiü's that the conimittee are at a loss to kaow ust wlmt its fbllest signifleation muy be. Some would eonsider one point of -eat excellence, while others of the same conimittee would tbink it of little valué. So far as 1 eau learn, there is 110 list of points agreed upon by any agi-icultural society which offers premiums for that class of stock, and there is a chanco for a wide variation of opinions. For many years I liave hoped that this subject would meet with that attention which it deserves. 11' a man has a cow thíit ís unuaual ni ner yicld of butter, her yield and trcatiiipnt could be readlly comparad by an acceptad standard of pointe. If he discovered in his cow certain exceltencies not in the standard, he can make them known. Hoplng that others of your readers will favor us with their views, 1 will oflVr a t'eW of thc requisitos to be considored in making' up a seale of points. 1. Breed and a?e of cow. I f thorOUghbred, what breed. If grade, liow graded. 2. Time of trial afler calviug. 3. Number of daya of' trial test ; not less than flve days at any one trial, aud not less than three trials in a year. 4. Quantity of milk in puunds (not quarts) to one poHnd of butter. 6. Pounds and onnees of butter when worked, salted and ready for inarket. 6. liow the milk and cream were treatod beíbre and at the time of churning. All to be divided so as to make a salle, 100 to be perfection. There may be other points that might be considered. But it seems to me that I have enough for the present. Could these points (or better unes) be adopted, those who take cows to fairs where premiums a e ofTered wonid know Avhat whs expeeted of them. Every part of the contest would be open to all concerned, and whea the committees liad ajrreed apon their verdict, it would olearly explain their views to the competitors. In this way, as it scems to me. fair justice woiild be the resuli. The cow with the best record show ld draw the pi'i.c not her owner. Each of the níne points can be readily compreliended, I trust. Brother dairymen, every where, plea.se give us your views. Cl'iticise Hiy scalo of points. -
