The ofíicers and undergraduates oí me University have for years considered that proper advantages for physical development are not offered to our stuents. With a view of obtaining the f -cilities for satisfying this long feit want, an organization knovwf as the " Athletic Association of the Uni versi tv of Michiean," was formed in the fall of 1878, by the undergraduates of the University. Several months after :ts formation, the Association became neoiTorated under the laws of the State, and by the articles of incorporation, a trust f und to be known as the " Gymnasium Fund" was established with James B. Angelí, Thomas M. Cooley, Moses Coit Tyler, Alonzo B. Palmer. Alpheus Felch, all of Ann Arbor, and John J. Bagley, of Detroit, as Trustees. The fund is also declared by these Articles to be irrevocable andunchangeable, unless the consent of the State Legislature is obtained by special applicatie! of the corporation. "While the general aim of this Association, as far as its undergraduate members are concerned, is to foster athletic games and out-door sports of all kinds, the special end in view, the one for whicta the organization was perfected, is the raising of money for the erection and equipment of a suitable gymnasi um. All the students of the University, whether members of the Athletic Association or not, have cheerf ully worked to increase the fund, which now amounts to $1,023.28 and is in the hands ot tne Treasurer of the Board, J. W. Knight Cashier of the First National Lank of Ann Arbor. This money has mostly been contributed f rom the treasuries of organizations entirely controlled by the students. Ilowever, a donation of S2-50 was received in April f rom E. C. Ilegeler, Fsq., of La Salie, Illinois. While the undergraduates are doing what they canto increase this building f und, they trust that the generosity of the Alumni and of the other friends of Michigan University will be stimulated to rendersubstantial .id to the pro et. Hope of aid from the State Legislatura is also entertained. Contributions can be made payable to the Treasurer, J. W. Knight, or to any one of the undersigned trustees, ing James B. Angelí, or Aionzo u. raimer, both of whom will be absent for some time f rom Ann Arbor. Alpheus Felch, James B. Angelí, Thomas M. Cooley, Alonzo B. Palmer, Moses CoitTyler, John J. Bagley, Board of Trustees. University of Mich., A. A-, May 13, '80.
