Concerning our military company which visited Monroe on the 5th, the Democrat of that city remarks: The Ann Arbor Co. was the most attractive in appearance, and there was no diaputing that they too were a splendidly drilled Company, but still were inferior to the Detroiters in accurate exeeution. Co. F. of Ypsilanti failed to come up to the standard acquired by the Ann Arbor boys, and consequently Detroit captured the first prize of $15) in gold, baving secured nine points out of a possible ten. The Ann Arbor boys took the second prize of $75 in gold. In response to a communication conveying the draft of $75 awarded to Co. A., the commanding offlcer writes: Ann Arbor, July 4, 1880. Sir: Yonrs of Julv öth is at hand. Con test now rest in the hands of our Treasurer. We are very much obliged to you and the citizens of Monroe for the kind treatment at their hands. - The company all join in saying that they never had a better time away from home as a company since their organization, and hope that sometime in the near future we may be abie to return you their thanks in a more substantial i'orm than on paper. We received from the committee more than we expected. ïlie Detroit Light Guard have our best wishes, and our congratulations accompaiiy them on their way home, although their captain entered 'the contest with picked men and reduced ranks, with bis seargents as pivot men, which was not military. On the other hand Co. A of the lst Regt. entered the contest with 15 new men in line. Had I reduced my company and placed my sergeants in the line, I might have bothered them more. I had rather come ontserond best with a full company. I than to come out first best with a pickéd compuny. Yours Bespectfully, To Gen.Spaulding,Cbief Marshal, Monroe.
