Delegates trom Hülsdale, Lenawee, Monroe and YVashtenaw counties met at Manchester on Tuesday to select a candidate for this (2d) congressional district. The committee on organization selected for permanent chairman Hon. F.M. Holloway of Hillsdale, demojratic candidate for governor, who ad- dressed the convention substantially as follows: It is with no ordinary pleasure that I come before yon to respond to the complimentary manner in which you have called upon me to preside over your deliberations. This is a great honor for one wiio during a long life bas been simply a farmer. I feel tocongratnlate vou over the auspiciousness of the times. I want to say to you to-dav, that, trom long experience ia the pohtical alíairs of tliís country, I have, not known since 18-52, a more promising outlook. We stand upon the principies of llie constitution, and our party would bring to the whole country the grcatest good. For some unforeseencircumstances the tide has run againsl us. Unfortunntely the rebellion broke upon ;he people of this country, and altliough the northern dernocracy rallied to the support of the unión and joined hands to crush secession, the republican party has continued the light and don't secm to understand the war closed lifteen years ano. It is continuing that war for partisan purpoaes. Whcn we presentcd a candidate for president a man whohas nuccessfully passed through three wars we believed the campaigu would bc conductod upon other thftn icctional issues.
