Mr. Fleieher, the ehief engineer oí thu Manchester, (Englaud) Steam Users' Asaociation tur the prevention of steam boiler explosions, has issued a most excellent fcntl practical report upou this subject, and we tin. i Uiat úurLD the year 1879 there was 110 l'ewer than 25 serious boiler explosious, causingtbe déatüg of 40 persons, au i injuries to 2 others. Of the above total, 9 explosions seem to have been due to ueiective eonuitioii; 5 to excessive preasure ; 4 to malconstruction, coupled with detective conditiun ; 3 to nialeonstructioü, alone: 2 to overheating througli shortness of water; an.i 1 to c.iuiking ander steam pressure. Besides the above there were '22 minor explosions, killing 15 and iujuring 3b persons, included in the number being 12 kitclien and cireulating boiler explosions - most of vvhich Mr. Fletclier beiieves miht have beeu preven ted by the use of a sinaü reliaule sifcty-valve. The active causes of these lamentable occurrences - they eau scarcely be terniea accidents - seem to be 3 iu number, namely, (1) faulty construction; (.2) absence oí recular inspection, aiKi (3) oarelessuess in us.ige. Ou the lirst iicuU tlicic ahuuld Oc no room for üoubt or.uustakes in the present state of our niechanical skill and knovvleJge. Tiie secoinl requirenient should be, by legal enactm ut, made oompulsory. ïne third want is one waicii no legisiature can meet, but it is worlhy of notice, that of the 2ó principal explosions last year only 2 ere traeed to over-hcating tlirotigh shortness of water, so that this causo may be considerod the least Important ol ilie trio, apart frum wlnoh it is obvious lliat considerations of personal salety will ahvays teiui to krep this risk vvithin due liuiits. Mr. Fletcher reuiarks, "the C.iuses of boiler explosiousare really very simple," ana we cordially unite wilh hun in eiijoiniii-i upon all users of suam power the lacesity of Uayiujf their boilers perio.,icaliy inspectcci, as beilig the nieaiis of ii i 1 others of pnvOiitiiii the appallinj; occurreuues vvhich every uovv anti thcii shock the com.iatnity. Tlie offlfiial returns give the value of dianiomls exponed froni the South AfVican diamond iields in 1879 as iJ'A,6S5,6l%tlie value of those iu 1878 being L381,711. The next decennial census of Engeland and Wales will be taken April 3 (Sunday), 1881; and the resul ts will be known and published witb.ii a week theieafter. New Haven, Conn., appears to be a centre of ihc industry of corset niaiuifacturing. There are nine corset I'actories tiiere, with an invesied capital of' $750,000. In the whole country there are twenty facioiies, with au iuvested capital of $1,8UO,ÜUO,
