"VVe last week published E. F. Allen s disclaimer, concerning the charge marie that he said if a person asked a re.mblican to vote the democratie ticket he onght to be shot in his tracks. Now come the stenographer, and files with us thefollowingaflfidavit, and Mr.AUen can answer it at his leisure. The evidence is against him strongly. State of Michigan. ) S9 County of Lenawee. ) ' Levant Brown being dnly sworn says that he is 30 years of agp, and is a steno"raper who was present at Iludson Mich., and he took in short hand notes the speech of E. P. Allen of Ypsilanti Mich.,delivpred at the aforesaid time and place, and that the following is a true copy of a porüon of his notes: "Some of you women may have been mothers of those men that went out from your streets here, to put down the democratie rebellion.and to-night sleep in these graves in your oemetery. Yes sleep in their graves, and 1 want to sn tO yon that the man who fought witli Lee and Jackson will vote the democratic ticket, and that in the li?ht of these facts the man that shonld ask me orshould ask yon to vote the democratie ticket, onght to be shot in hia tracks." Levant Brown. Subscribed and sworn to bef ore me this 18th day of September, A. D. 1880. 'E. Bates, .lustice of thePeace. James A. Garfield engineered the back-pay steal that caused a storm of Itictignation to nrise thronghout the the country: a republican lnvestigating committee bvanded Mm and the repubHcan press in is73painted him in words tliat live and burn and that will ever and burn; as on e of the thieves of tne presfieney in 1870 his memoi-y will neverV)e forgotten, and theindiiination of the American people ought to be expressed in such loml tm al Uu polls ïh November, that no party Will herefter dare to select a candidato vvith an infamous reoord for the highosthoners in the gift of a f ree, people. The combined democratie and republïcan vote in Maine in 1876 was 110,217, and the majority for Hayes was 16,383, r about 14 per cent. of the combiüed yote. Tlie combined democratie and republican vote of tlie state of New York in 1876 was 1,011,156, and tlie majority for Tilden was 32,7-12, or about Sper cent. of the combined vote. The repubtlcaat have this year lost all of their majority in Mame. A similar relative loss to them in New York tliis fall would írfve Hancock a majority in that state of 180,000. ïtobert Sraalis is nominated for congress by the republicana of the fifth 8outh Carolina district. Smalls is a mulatto and reeently pardoned fvom the penitentiary for receivinp a $5000 bribe. Garfleld reeived a brfbe for an equal amonnt, but escaped the pcnitentiaiy. Justice it appears don't liold her scales wiüi equal poise in diiïereut sections of this comilry. ThO nomfnation of Frank Jones of Portsmouth for governor of New Ilamphire by the rtemocrats, makes thnt state reasonably sure for us. Twice he has been elected to eongress from a republican district. The state has been a close one for years, and the popnlarity ef Jones as evinced in other campaigns -will quite likely place lier in the demo; eratic pyramid in November.
