The republicana being in a minority in the county and knowing they raust be defeated on a party issue, as they should, try to run in their candidates on a personal line by lies and slanders and mud-Uirowing. The eontest by Mr. Emoriek against our candidato for prosocuting attomey, Mr. Charles K. Whitman, is a wicked exa nple of tliis system. Mr. Whiiinan ia a democrat of great prominenee and promise, notonly in Washtenaw oounty but in the state at laige. He is a man of high talents and great aïjility, and one whom tlie democracy can not afford to slaughter. His services to the party have been of the utmost val uo in the past and must be retained for the future. To defeat sucli a man as this, his opponent has stooped to the lowest and vilest trickery; one day, in one locality, eharging Mr. Whitman with being a temporáneo man and the next day in another locality with being a liquor man. Democrats are not to be blinded or misled by sneh stuff and double-dealing. Mr. Whitman is an old resident of this county and is intimately assoeiated with her interests. He has pent six years of his life in our noble university and received f rom it three degrees. The demooracy should be prond to honor such a man and hold hirn up as their Htandard bearer that his eloquent tongue may in the future as in the past be heard in behalf of pure and honest (tovernruent.
