For the splendid victory we have won in Washtenaw connty, we are Largely indebted to the Hon. ('lias. !í. Riehmond, chairman of the county commltLike an oasis in the greal republican desert of Michigan thia countj stands Becurely anohored to democratie faith and rolls upnearlyher usual maority for the national ticket, t nder his generalship we haveearried through nearly every candidato on the local ticket, recovered the senatorsiiip and ,ne representativo, and given Mr. Waldbya flattering majority. Purely for the love ol tne tanu wimin him, Mr. Richmond consented tofullil the duties of chaiTman oí the oounty committee. H is at best a thankless position. Few men are fttted to perform itsfunctions and fewer stili are wllling to spend time and means, and throwin their labor without hope of reward as lie lias done. Notwithstandiiig this sacrifico, there are doubtletes some wlio wil! enter eomplaint ajiainst him ; some who believe they could have performed the duty better. NotMng lias heen done, ïiothing will be done, unless fault is foUöd of the doer. The taultlinder always was and ahvays willbe. Whoever leads, there will be persona in the ranks, who think themselves more competent to lead than be led. The county has been thoroughly oanvassed and no town has boen without one more meetings held within its bordei-s. The chairman set out early i„ the campaiKii to Sligfct DO loeality and tofurnisha speaker whereverdesired. That we have not been able to secure more talent from abroad has been Bo fault of bis. Many times he made theattempt ónlyto recelve the unvarying reply: " Waáhtenaw is safe; you can take care of her; other localiües need our Berviees more." Mr. Rielunond has conducted thelo?al campaign vigorously and by honest methods. He can not, would not, stoop to dishonorable means to accomplish anvhodv'a success. Neither has hebeen extravagant. He has curtailed expense wherever possible. He has ülled many ippointments tb speak at the risk of bealth, ofttimes traveling overland i rainstoms; freely givlng lime and effori to further the cause; and more or less out of pocket. Ilis only reward is öie victory achieved in the county, which is full and complete save the clerk and register, the latter being possibly elected by a sraall majority. ín the name of the demooracy of the county, we assume1 the privilege of saying : " Well done thou good and faithful servant."' ____ ■
