SMALL FIRE KEPT FIREMEN BUSY

A measly two by four fire on Fourteenth street, near the corner of Volland street Saturday, kept the fire laddies busy for about an hour. The fire was in a dwelling occupied by Mrs. Elsie J. Lane. From appearance at the time of discovery it would seem that the fire started in the basement back of the gasoline stove. It then ran up the walls to the roof and at the same time followed the floors and partitions. There was no one  in the building at the time and the fire was not discovered until it had reached the top of the building.

The alarm reached the engine house at 6:39 p.m. and the department promptly responded. when they arrived there to be considerable fire, but just where it was not easily determined. The department first tackled the fire in the basement and put it out, they they went on a hunt for more flames. These were not so easily found. Not until they had dragged out their line of hose up several crooked staircases, cut a hold in the ceiling and crowded up under the roof could they get the water on the right spot.

The firemen are entitled to credit for the patience and perseverance they displayed on the occasion. They did their best to extinguish the flames without flooding the house or tearing it to pieces The total damage done was in the neighborhood of $100.
