Wednesday evening at 7:13 o'clock four desperate tramps walked into the butcher shop of Xavier Zachmann on Detroit street and before leaving the shop knocked him down and pounded his son. They ordered some meat which Mr. Zachmann cut off and wrapped up for them. When he wanted them to pay they told him to go to a warm place, with other opprobrious epithets. As he insisted that he wanted his pay they knocked him down and save his son some not very gentle taps. The son immediately ran for the police, finding Patrolman David Collins and John O'Mara standing in front of Brown's drug store on Main street. They both very promptly responded and caught the fellows at the corner of Detroit and Catherine streets. They objected to going along, but Collins and O'Mara made them go toward the jail. At Fourth avenue the officers were reinforced by Officers Kelsey, Fred Gillen and George lsbel. The tramps were considerably intoxicated.

Tlie bunch of four tramps arrested for assaulting Butcher Zachmann were brought before Justice Doty yesterday afternoon. They gave the following names and addresses: John Allen, Toledo; John Trew, Youngstown; James Conway, Saginaw: William Johnson, Bay City. They pleaded not guilty to assault and battery and were given an immediate trial.

Johnson was not found to be implicated in the assault and was let off on suspended sentence. The others were found guilty and were each sentenced to 65 days in the Detroit house of correction.
