FARRINGTON'S TRIAL BEGUN

For the Murder of Jesse L. Hooker on Jam. 5

BIG CROWD PRESENT

The Defense Will Be Temporary Insanity-Farrington Has Four Attorneys

The trial of J. E. Farrington, of Milan, charged with the murder of Jesse E. Hooker, in Adrian, about 11 o'clock on the night of Sunday, Jan. 5, commenced Monday morning. The charge against him is malicious and felonious murder made by Sheriff Wm. Shepherd, and Prosecuting Attorney Sampson, of Lenawee, has the case in charge for the people. He will try the case alone, while for the defense there appear R. A. Watts, Congressman Henry C. Smith, who returned from Washington for the purpose, and Hon. A. J. Sawyer, and Clarke K. Baldwin. Besides these there were in Adrian yesterday Ed. Farrington, brother of the accused; Eli Kinear, Alf. Lewis, F. G. Hasley, Frank Sayles, father of Mrs. Bert Farrington, and Rollo, the young eight year old son of the accused man.

Monday morning the prisoner was not brought into the courtroom, but the case was brought up, and on motion of A. J. Sawyer, for the defense, the clerk, sheriff and Justices Humphrey and Vandegrift were instructed to strike an extra panel of 30 jurymen.

But little can be learned of what the defense will put forth, but it has leaked out that temporary insanity will be the cause alleged.

Prosecuting Attorney Sampson has added to the list of witnesses several men for whom young Hooker worked, including Rev. Geo. Humphrey, of Palmyra.

In the afternoon standing room was at a premium and people were standing on chairs in the hallway looking for a chance to get a glimpse at the center in front of the judge's bench. Sheriff Shepherd and several officers were on hand to keep order, but their services were not needed in this direction.

When court was opened Congressman Smith stated that he had learned that six new witnesses had been added to the information since a knowledge of the case had come to the defense, and he asked the court that an adjournment might be had until tomorrow morning, to enable the defense to find out something of who their witnesses are. There was no opposition to this on the part of the prosecution, and Judge Chester granted the time. He then ordered court adjourned. It took the audience some little time to realize what had been done, and they then went away somewhat disappointed.

The six additional witnesses for the prosecution are Rev. and Mrs. Geo. Humphrey, Palmyra; A. W. Smith, postmaster of Adrian; Mrs. L. Conklin, Mrs. Bert Nichols and Frank Burton. all of whom are supposed to testify to the good character of Jesse Hooker.

When Congressman Smith stepped op to the judge after adjournment to inquire who these witnesses are, the judge told him that the prosecutor might give him the addresses, "But," he added, with a twinkle in his eye, "you probably know where to find A. W. Smith." The congressman flushed a little, and thought that possibly he might find the gentleman.

Court then adjourned until today.
