Appointed Attorney for the M. C. R. R. System

To Move to Detroit

Appointment Means That He Ranks Third in Legal Department

O. E. Butterfield, at the age of 31, becomes the attorney for the general system of the Michigan Central railroad. The appointment, which has just been made, means that Mr. Butterfield ranks third ln the legal department of this great railroad system and his only superiors in the department are Ashley Pond, the general counsel, and Henry Russel, the general attorney. It means that Mr. Butterfield will superintend railroad cases from Chicago to Buffalo and from Mackinac to Toledo and this will necessitate his removal to Detroit for his headquarters.

Mr. Butterfield is a brilliant young man. For some time back it has been freely predicted that he would be the leading attorney of the Washtenaw bar, but the Michigan Central has recognized his ability and drawn him away from the narrow field here and placed him in a responsible position which his abilities justify.

Ora Elmer Butterfield was born November 9, 1870, at Brattleboro, Vt. He was educated in the schools there and was graduated in 1880. He worked at the carpenters' trade for some time and then went to Childs' business college, in Springfield, Mass., graduating in 1888. He spent the next year in Colorado and in the fall of 1889 entered the law department of the University of Michigan. He was graduated and admitted to the bar in June, 1801. He entered into partnership with John F. Lawrence. He has been an alderman and city attorney. He was a delegate to the National Convention of the League of Republican clubs at Omaha in 1898 and was elected Michigan member of the executive committee. He has been chairman of the Washtenaw republican county committee since 1896 and was also circuit court commissioner for four years.

His many friends congratulate him upon his fine promotion, which came to him unsolicited.
