February 2 was Candlemas and bear day combined. About 11 o'clock the clouds parted and the sun shone out in all its glory. Simultaneous with the appearance of Old Sol and by previous arrangement the venerable weather prognosticator emerged from his hiding, but owing to the somewhat unfavorable weather his stay was very brief. The Misses Cristie and Maud Mulholland met the distinguished personage upon his arrival and presented him with a pair of beautiful pet kittens. In return for this gracious compliment the ladies were presented by his bearship each with a lock of his hair. Then making a low, graceful bow he gathered the little felines in his arms and repaired to his underground residence for a six weeks' absence.

On the first of April next Herbert Shock will have closed five years of continuous service as tenant on the T. S. Vandevort farm of 160 acres, at an annual rental of $300. Those of us who had knowledge of the deal were of the opinion that Herbert was in it with both feet and so deep that would never make his escape, and predicted that his scalp would at the close of the first year be dangling from Vandevort's belt. But it was evident that we hadn't sized the fellow up properly. When Herbert started in his outfit consisted of a very limited supply of farm utensils, one horse and bob-tail cow. During the term of five years he has invested about $400 in tools and machinery, paid his rent promptly, largely increased his stock all along the line. besides adding several members to his domestic circle. But he has concluded to pull up stakes and remove to pastures green, for the reason that the water supply is inadequate for his large amount of stock and the dwelling house has grown gray, with age and is in a rickety condition from top to bottom. When the family lie down at night for their usual snooze they wonder whether the break of day will find them in their accustomed resting place or in the cellar among the beer kegs and apple barrels. During his five residence Mr. Shock has lived in peace with his neighbors, is a man of good habits and an all around good citizen.
