Merchants Flim-flammed
By a Couple of Very Smooth Rascals
-CLAIMED TO BE STUDENTS-
ONE EVEN WENT SO FAR AS TO
ASSUME THE NAME OF
A BONA-FIDE STUDENT
Last week two young fellows worked Llndenschmldt & Apfel for $56 worth of clothes and furnishing goods by a very smooth game. They rented rooms at 603 Monroe street and 328 South Fourth avenue a couple of days ago, claiming to be students. One of them went to the clothing store Wednesday and assumed the name of "Rufus A. Brown of Toledo," which is the name of a bona fide student so that when the address was looked up in the directory it would appear all right. He negotiated for a suit of clothes at $32 and had it charged.
Thursday another "student" giving the name of James Pond went into the store and selected goods to the amount of $24 and wanted them charged. . !it was a stranger they asked for formal Identification. Pond went out and brought in "Brown," who said it was all right, and the goods were delĂvered to bc Monroe street address. Thursday evening Pond asked the landlady if some goods had been delivered there. She showed him the packages and he complained that they were not right and went out of the house stating that he was going to return them.
That was the last seen of him or "Brown."
The case.' was put into the hands of the officers and the genuine Rufus A. Brown was brought down to the store. Of course, it became certain then that another man had simply used his name to work a game, and he received the apologies for the inconvenience. The officers have no trace of the guilty pair.
