Obituary

Philip Jacob Katz, for 50 years a respected resident of Ann Arbor, died at his home on Third street, last Wednesday morning, of heart failure and a complication pf diseases. He was born and Hochdorr, Wuertemberg, Germany, on May 2, 1839. In 1852 he with his father and his brother, Fred, crossed the ocean, coming directly to Ann Arbor, where all lived the remainder of their lives. Mr. Katz was confirmed in Zion Luteran church in 1853, during the pastorate of Rev. Mr. Schmid, and was a consistent member of that church to the time of his death. He enlisted at the first call for volunteers in '61, and was given the ran of sergeant, and took part in the first battle of Bull Run. Accustomed to the indoor life of a tailor, his health gave way in the army and he was honorably discharged. In 1863 he married Miss Agatha Frey. He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mrs. Fred Roehm, of this city, and Mrs. Andrew Steeb, of Ann Arbor town, to mourn his loss. his funeral, conducted by Rev. A.L. Nicklas, was held at his home last Friday afternoon. The deceased was a member of the Arbeiter Verein and also of the G.A.R. post. Many beautiful floral offerings betokened the esteem in which he was held. His remains were interred in Forest Hill cemetery.

Prof. H.C. King, late instructor in the University of Pekin, has just returned from the Student Volunteer convention in Toronto and will speak at the Y.M.C.A. next Sunday afternoon. He will tell of the siege of Pekin in which he was engaged in the desperate defense against the Boxers.
