Jackson, Mich., March 24. - Henry E.. Edwards, the .Jackson postmaster to be succeeded by Dr. O. J. R..Hanna, Saturday gave out a statement attacking Congressman Henry C. Smith.  Edwards says that, in consideration of the help he gave Smith in his campaign in the fall of 1900, Smith agreed to keep Edwards in the postmastership until December, 1902.

"Further than that," says Edwards, "Smith informed me that he had entered into an arrangement with Chas E. Townsend al the time he was nominated, promising that, If the Jackson county delegation would vote for him, he would not be a candidate tor a third term."

During the session of the last legislature, Edwards states, Smith was anxious to get rid of Jackson county and have it placed in some other district, to relieve himself of keeping his promise to Townsend. Edwards says Smith engaged his influence 'to this end and promised him the postoffice permanently. as a consideration. The legislature did not change the district.

Edwards says he. did not set his friends to work to hold the office, because he rested upon Mr. Smith's assurances. He has been postmaster since February, 1898.
