KOCH BROS. GOT THE CONTRACT
------
Koch Bros. have received the contract for the new Walter S. Perry school, their big being $34,789. The school board at its special meeting Friday evening considered the bids and awarded the contract.
President of the Board Mills being unavoidably absent, Trustee Cavanaugh was elected president pro tem. The trustees present were: Trustees Seabolt, Scott, Kyer, Beal, Bach, Cavanaugh and Everbach.
Trustee Beal, chairman of the building committee, reported on the bids offered. The lowest bids were those received from Bay City, Toledo and Koch Bros. of Ann Arbor. Guessing as to what the first two bidders calculated for heating, ventilating and sewerage, the bids were very close, Koch Bros. being the lowest by $10. As lumber would go up in price on March 25 it was important that the contract should be let at once. He moved that the contract be awarded to Koch Bros. and that the building committee be given authority to make changes and additions. Supported by Trustee Scott.
Contractor John Koch was asked if he could complete the building by Sept. 1. He answered he could not, but could finish it by Nov. 1.
Trustee Kyer said he favored home labor and would like to see Koch Bros. get the contract, but he did not want to vote to let the contract until the board had made arrangements with the board of regents about the use of the present building which they had agreed to vacate by July 1.
Mr. Koch explained why he could not do a good job and get the building completed by Sept. 1 and also why nothing would be gained by carrying the work over the winter.
The resolution of Trustee Beal then passed, Trustee Kyer voting no.
Trustee Kyer explained that he favored Koch Bros., but he did not vote for them because the board did not know where it was at, as to the present building.
Trustee Scott said he felt like Trustee Kyer, but they all knew Koch Bros. He had more respect for Mr. Koch in his saying they could not finish the building by Sept. 1 than if he had said they could, and then were unable to.
On motion of Trustee Seabolt, the bonds of Koch Bros. for their faithful performance and for work and labor and materials were fixed at $10,000 each.
On motion of Trustee Scott the lots of the district on Forest avenue were ordered listed with real estate agents.
On motion of Trustee Scott Findlay brown pressed hydraulic brick were ordered substituted for Dearborn brick at an extra cost of $900.
Contractor Koch suggested several changes that would save the district money. The building committee will consider the suggestion with the architect.
